Jill Scott (n e Joyce Scott) was born to her mother on the 4th of April in 1972. Since she was the only child, she was raised also by her maternal grandmother. Scott was a graduate of The Philadelphia High School for Girls. Then she enrolled in Temple University. Along with two jobs part-time, she also studied secondary teaching in Temple University. She planned to become an high school English teacher. After three years of being an aide to the teacher and a student the possibility of becoming a high school English teacher was cut short. Being a poet, she began performing at live poetry recitals. Later, she joined forces along with Amir Quest Thompson (of The Roots) to create an ensemble. You Got Me was co-written by the two. During a Roots performance, she made her debut to be an artist. Afterwards she was able to secure collaborations such as Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. While on the Canada tour for Rent, the Broadway musical Rent the Musical, she gained valuable experience performing. She was the first signing artist for Hidden Beach Recordings.
